Markets and Fleas

I am crazy about flea markets so we went to few flea markets. The best I have to say is the Brooklyn Flea market. We took the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn, about half an hour journey but it was so worth it. I almost lose myself there.

I was surprise when I caught myself buying cushion covers, sofa throws, door mats. Seperti kata boss Ola lola, kita ni dah jadi makcik makcik cool. >.<
During the Winter, the flea was held at the old Savings bank, One Sky Hanson. With Barclays right around the corner and tons of other shopping nearby (Target heaven, VS, Bath and Body Work), its a great stop during our visit to the area (but not so great for the wallet). The building is cool, with lots of skylights, you see all the old tellers and the vault. It has 3 stories of good vintage stuff. I was in awe.
In the summer, the Brooklyn flea market will be held at the waterfront at Fort green. S was disappointed, he prefer the outdoor flea. But its was freaking cold sapa yang kuasa nak jalan jalan kat luar.
In my opinion calling this place a Flea Market, is a bit of a mistake, because it's more of an arty/vintage/antique market if you ask me. You can find interesting pieces of modern/creative jewellery as well as your vintage or antique items. And there's a bit of everything: furniture, clothes, hats, food, ornaments, etc and it's just big enough to spend enough money to feel satisfied. Comparing with a real flea market, it's slightly more pricey.

S was at his grounds. There were several booths selling cool skate stuffs and records. Oh the records collection was off the roof. We bought close to a dozen of records. It was dirt cheap. USD4-7 per record, mana nak dapat that price in SG. S went through crates after crates of record. As the obedient wife, I relek one corner sambil makan donuts.
I found some owesome pawsone, cake stand (Yes, I angkut that thing. S was shaking his head sambil membebel 'Macam Singapore tak ada'), 5 bucks babe, mana nak dapat kat Singapore, Animal cushions for Nyla, that one also 5 bucks each from this talented lady who personally design and jahit that thingy, shabby chic photo frames, suka sangat and some vintage tshirts at 1 bucks each.
In Manhattan, another good flea is the hell's kitchen flea markets and the green flea at Columbus Ave. But the selection was not as fantastic as the one at Brooklyn.

I have always enjoy Flea markets. It is a unique experience that the mall just can't offer. Its a fun activity to check out some weird shit, eat great food, and you may just find that special piece that speaks to you. Sigh... I miss that old skool Clark quey flea market that S and myself used to frequent during our dating years.

Shopping sampai pagi

I tell you I am the worst tourist ever, Rahima our host gave some advice and the first advice they gave:-

Don't stare. Even if a woman wearing a tiger costume sits down next to you on the subway (which happened to her once), act like nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Seasoned New Yorkers are always unfazed.

I was staring at every new yorker that pass by. S was so annoyed 'Can you please don't be so Jakun?'
It was totally different from the European, people there tends to blend in, they use black or neutral colour, but here you can basically see all the quirks, want to wear all electric blue? Neon Pink? Go ahead. In this city, it'll only make you cooler. So I decide to wear a H&M neon orange blouse, which I dun dare to wear it back home. I am not sure why I buy it in the first place. So I ask the husband 'So cool enough' he just replied 'OMG, I just froze, just by looking at you' If I can throw a washing machine at him, I would.

How could you not stare. We met a guy in a suit and tie and a green face. Literally green face. He sat opposite us in the train and its difficult not to look. To kill time, S and I came up with numerous and ridiculous reasons why he painted his face. Maybe its a dare for him since St Patrick day is just around the corner, maybe he dreamt that he was incredible hulk last night so he painted himself green, maybe his wife ask him to, because it turns her on or because he just loves green. We came with lots of 'Maybe' till we reach our station.

Don't get me started with their metro. Every cabin have their own entertainment, groups of break dancers, oldies with their saxophone and their harmonicas. They will expect tips from you of course. I love to see all these talented bunch. I even bought a CD sample from this young lady who sings and plays the guitar at station 77th St. Her voice is a cross of Jewel and Colbie Caillat. We let go 2 trains coz I just wanna see her perform. S just bear with me because he loves me. -.- Self expression and busking are acceptable even in the subway stations.

NYC is called the City that never sleep. As mention in my previous post I was shocked to know that their subway is 24 hours. Tu sebab lah kotor and hancing.... Forever 21 in time square is open till 3am and Apple store is open 24/7. So shopping lah sampai pagi.

So that is what we did the next day. We were greated with heavy snow storm. It was S first encounter with the snow so he was very jakun. Happy semacam, abih sakit the next day. Macam nak demam lah, sakit tekak lah, hingus meleleh lah. Kurang Vitamin C betol.

I hate snow, layers and layers of clothing, long john, turtle necks, long sleeves, dah mcm bantal bergerak and it gets slippery all around, I fell once wearing that yellow boots and beg S for a new boots 'Babe, I think I need new boots, this boots cannot make it. Its too slippery and my feets are cold'

Thank goodness there was a shop around the corner that sell amazing looking boots. I purchase one, and start melawa and melaram... oh I forget to tell you... I fell 5 times with the new boots. S memang dah lama tak kuasa nak layan I.

So due to the bad weather, we postpone our site visiting and attack SOHO, Shopping heaven for S. We visited Supreme, The Hundreds, DQM, Journeys, Blade, Shut, etc... Kaki macam nak terputus Jalan. One advice I can give is to download NYC city Map apps on Iphone. That app is really heaven send. Its clearly state on a 3D maps all the shops available in the area and district.

We enter every shops just to get some warm. We were really not prepared for this very very cold weather. And the people are all so nice and warm except the one from Supreme. That one s-hole. At most shops, you will always be greated with smiley people asking 'Hello how ya doin'?' 'Great and cold. Is it always this cold in New York' S would normally menyampuk 'Dah jangan melebih. Dia tanya how are you ajer' tsk.

Oh we met Def Mos at Supreme. S was star struck. We are not into hip hop but we are aware of his existence. He approached him for a picture but that superstar politely decline. I keep blaming him 'You should say Salam Yasin Bey(his muslim name) instead of Hello, I'm from Singapore, Can I take a picture with you, with that gugu eyes. Mcm kemaruk. Takut lah dia' S jeling I, bila I cakap gitu.... ada patut.

Another great place to shop is the factory outlet, Woodbury Common. Oh that place is hugeeeeeee. Please wear comfortable shoe cause the pavement sucks. I have to ditch the boots and grab a slipper. Imagine slipper and snow. Sigh...

We spent the whole day here, don't forget to bring a luggage. Sound kiasu but trust me you will need it.

To go to Woodsbury, take the subway, stop at Grand Central and walk to Port Authority Bus Terminal. I would recommend that you purchase the ticket on line sebab ada $5 discount. The trip to Woodsbury takes around 1 hour and comes with beautiful scenery, farm lah, mountain clad snow lah.

Once you reached at the factory outlet you will be given a booklet of discount for most of the store. Best shop so far was the Oakley and Coach. I tell you makcik makcik kalau pergi sana confirm borong. It was music to my ear when I was greated by the sales person 'Hello Ma'am there will be further 50% discount off the price tag' OMGGGGG... untung my mother, my mother in law, my sister in law and orang orang yang kirim. It was really a good steal for a coach bag. With my currency converter in hand, I go from one corner to the other, mcm main supermarket spree. S relek one corner, kira duit. Hahahahaha...

It was dark when we left the outlet. We took the last bus with a luggage bag and blister on both feet. The laki tengokkan ajer, sebab dia malas nak layan bini dia. Kejam!!!

Oh on the way back we singgah Grand Central Station. Since we knew that we have no time to visit this place again, with seliper and limping legs, I seret my luggage bag to that station.

Another good place to shop is definitely Century 21. OMG, I spent close to 3 hours in that store. S just geleng kepala and spend his time at Starbucks opposite the building to get free wifi.

Top of the world

It was snowing the day before. Snow storm. I tell you. Even the New Yorkers were puzzled on why it was still snowing even in March. They were expecting sunny day through out the month.

The following day was a perfect day for sightseeing, it was cloudy but the temperature was still below 5 degrees. The balls were freezing!!!

We visited Rockefeller Centre, Top of the Rock. This is one of those venues that you can get by with experiencing once, and then you are good for the rest of your life.

The entryway to the 70-floor building is flanked by the iconic Rockefeller Centre ice skating ring, mall, and NBC Studios. Ramai orang lepak lepak there. Pakkal tak tau skate.

As soon as we entered, there was some confusion as to where to go. We each purchased in advance a New York Pass, a booklet that would get us into 6 must visit places in the city so that we didn't have to wait in line for tickets this was included in the price.. Upon entry, we noted that the signs that were posted were a bit convoluted. We didn't know if we should get in line to take the elevators upward, or if we should check in with someone first to validate our passes. So confusing.. So macam biasa si bini ni lah yang kena excuse me sana, excuse me sini. The husband only can say;

'Malas bertanya sesat jalan'
'Den you go and ask lah'
'Jorang lagi suka kalau pompuan tanya'
'Benci lah'

After the gaduh gaduh sayang, an elevator shuttled us up a couple of floors where we had to pass through a security checkpoint. Good grief! The inspection was so through. Sungguh the leceh. Then there were a short documentary on the history of Rockerfella.

The elevator ride up to the rock is interesting. It is a mini countdown, I almost felt like I was Charlie in the glass elevator. Believe it or not since you are going so high you do get that ugly feeling in your gut when you go back down. I just clenched on to the rail when that happened. Once dah sampai....OOOH MY WORD, the view is breathtaking I tell you.

You really get a whole view of all of Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn, the bridges, Central Park, and the Empire state building, this is just to name a few of the things you see. The city is beautiful and being up at the Rock you really get to appreciate and take in all the views of the city and the history that comes along with it.

The edge was separated with glass panel and not some fencing (Empire State Building) that gets in a way when you take pictures.

We were surprised that after all the walking, we were still game for another adventure, so we decide to view the skyline at night from the Empire State Building. Another must go. Empire State Building, is also included in the New York Pass. All my life I have called this Building 'The King Kong Building' Ingat tak citer king kong, yang dia bergayut kat building tu.

We went at 11.30pm. The building closes at 2am and the last lift was at 1.15am. It was super smooth, no que, no rush, security as usual is a bitch, more thorough than Top of the Rock, jacket jacket semua kena bukak. The building and the lift is a bit ol skol as compared to TOTR and security was tighter.

But once we reach the top floor, we were greated with breathe taking view and strong and very very cold wind. Mengigil babe. It was a totally different experience to view the same thing during the day and at night. Looking down the city that high up and lit up like that was amazing!!!

If your time is limited in NYC and you have to choose between Top of the Rock and Empire State. Top of the Rock wins hand down.

Square at a time

Ok where do I begin.

After I had applied for esta. Next important matter is accommodation, we settled on airbnb. Location was perfect just two block away from the direct line 6 from the 77th Street. There are direct train to major attraction like Empire state building, Grand Central, Soho, Union Square.

The room was clean and tidy. I was happy with the room. But we have to climb up 5 storey high of steep narrow staircase. S kena warning several time for smoking in the room. Other than that the room was perfect.

Since it was a really longggg flight and we were dead tired, we grab a bite and slept the whole afternoon. It was 10pm when we wake up and begin to explore the city that never sleep.
We went to time square and I was surprise that all the shops were still open despite it was already close to midnight. I didn't know that the Subway was 24/7.

This is the iconic location other than what's been portrayed endlessly on national TV, movies, magazines, and even the damn yearly new years eve countdown. Even S feels that Time Square will be our first location after we have settle down.
It was raining snow and so we just basked in the LED at the steps sambil makan chicken over rice (Oh halal food is in every corner at NYC, falafel, kebab, pizze, pretzel. All halal). I love reading all the billboards, watching all the videos and watching all the energy of the hundreds of other people who like me are so amazed and enthused by all the activity. It was close to midnight mind you.

Times Square is more than just billboards, tv monitors, stores, restaurants and Broadway musicals. It is American Culture at its best........a mixture of energy, music, food, lights, positive vibes and people of all races and colors enjoying life and good times. I love the magic of Times Square. We visit this place almost every day to just relek one corner and people watch.

And here we are

And we touch done safely at JFK airport awhile ago. Alhamdullilah. S is checking on some stuffs... and I am left alone here at some coffee joint cause I need my caffeine, 26 hours flight mind you. I am totally stoned. The weather is madness. It 2 degrees outside. I cannot even breathe.

Free WIFI, Caffaine fix, Tango-ed baby girl, Skype the sisters, Called the mother, Check and email the office. All done.. a few minutes to spare so I blog.

The plane ride to JFK was way too long and uncomfortable. I feel so claustrophobic. So rimas. So butt cramp.

I remembered during our honeymon flight to Amsterdam we were separated. He was in the front sit, while I was sitting a row at the back. I can sense he was pretty worried but at the same time pretty relief. Coz, you see, I tend to talk non-stop during flight. It keeps me, well.. hhhmmm more at ease more relax.

We get to our sit, and I sat verrryyyyy close to S and announced to him that I was going to be an annoying traveller. You know, the kind that asks you questions the entire time, the kind that would make you jump off the plane on long-haul flights.

“So, where you from and why are you going to New York?” I asked close to his ear while chomping loudly on my peanuts. This airline always kasi peanut ones.

He replied "Nak carik bini no.2" Due to his monkey response, I threw peanuts at him.

S laughed at first and got so annoyed the third time I did it. He was watching some movie on the flight. I pulled out his ear piece and said

'So, what are you watching??'
'I'm watching some movie that you have not watch. Go away.'
'Oh that one ah!! Lousy story line. No need to watch, talk to meeeehhhh'
I got bored of disturbing him so I opened a book to read and got so engrossed in it. A few minutes later, S turned to me…. 'So where you from?'

A Little Big Apple

We were lazing around the sofa when S mention....'Wanna go for a short Holiday? Just Us'

I sat up instantly with sparkling eye and a hopeful smile (tak tau lah kalau my eyes betol betol sparkle at that time, cuma I very the excited and typing the sentence 'sparkling eyes' seems to emphasis the excitedness)

Ok back to sofa scene...

Since he said short trip, I was thinking of Phuket (oooohhh I love that place, their sea, sun, sand, suntan lotion, island hoping, diving, snorkeling, elephant ride, food, hotel, massage, oh I can go on and on) or Hong kong(never been there), Bandung (another place I love) or even Bintan... den he said the words..
'BIG APPLE'

Hell No.... That is not a short trip... I was looking at his face.. No he was not kidding... I have so many things to settle within a short 2 week notice. The Bestie boys - No sleep till Brooklyn was playing over and over again in my head. Mental checklist, to visit that Brooklyn bridge and that famous Brooklyn flea market.

We were left with 2 weeks to plan for a 2 weeks vacation.

I have to search and practically beg a CM from another site to cover my duty. I was wailing at him close to tears, soo close, 'Bro.. I will do anythinggggggggggggg' So he agreed on a 'I heart NY' T shirt a mug, a magnet and if possible a signature from Kim Kardashian. Mabok ker apa? Shes in LA lah. . I'll buy him 5 magnets and photoshop Kim's signature.

I practically rummage through my wardrobe to see what I can sell to get some extra cash for that trip. Ebay and craiglist are heaven send.

Since S is doing the ticketing, I am left to do other major research for the trip.

I applied for ESTA, since we do not need to have a VISA to enter United States, we need to apply for ESTA. No ESTA no Time Square.

Search on line for accommodation, we turn to airbnb instead of the normal hotel. Mar recommend a few good locations and some advice and tips for NYC.

I heard the weather was hectic. Damn all my winter clothes, coats and boots were on loan by the aunt and cousin for their Geneva trip. I have to korek what ever is left and just dump it in the luggage.

I am currently still at work, day dreaming of the statue of liberty. I promise my self its a 'tengok negeri orang' kind of trip and not a shopping trip.

Lulu stay warm and I'll see you in a week or two. Adios.

Big apple here I come.
